Why Oconomowoc's water stays groundwater

Waukesha's switch to Lake Michigan water raised a fair question farther west: is Oconomowoc next? The city has not asked for lake water and has no pipe that could bring it, which settles what a softener here will be working on.

The divide that puts Oconomowoc outside the basin

Between Oconomowoc and Lake Michigan runs the subcontinental divide, and the city lies west of it, outside the Great Lakes basin. Its water comes from its own deep wells, seven of them, feeding the city system through four entry points.

For a community outside the basin, getting Lake Michigan water is not a matter of laying pipe, as Waukesha's case showed.

What Waukesha went through

For Waukesha, the road to lake water ran through about ten years of application work under the Great Lakes Compact. All eight Great Lakes states reviewed the request, and the city had to build a pipeline to return the water after use.

That is the kind of effort the switch took for a city outside the basin.

Where Oconomowoc stands

Oconomowoc has not applied for anything like that, and it has no lake connection to build on. On any timescale that matters for a softener bought this year, the city's water stays what it is: groundwater from its own wells.

That is not a forecast about forever. It is what the record shows today, no application and no connection, and the practical reading for a household follows from it: plan around well water, and watch the city's annual water quality reports, where any change in the numbers would show up first.

Groundwater still moves

Staying on wells does not mean the numbers hold still. The utility's 2022 report averaged 317 milligrams per liter of hardness; its 2025 report averages 375. Groundwater chemistry drifts, and here it drifted upward.

Both averages are very hard by the USGS cutoff of 180.

So what does an Oconomowoc softener get set for?

Size and set a softener for the water coming out of your tap now, from the city's wells, not for a lake supply that is not on its way. And read the tap, not only the report, because the report's own numbers have moved.

Homes on private wells in Lac La Belle and Summit draw groundwater too, from their own wells, with no published figure at all.

Common questions

Does any Oconomowoc home get Lake Michigan water?

Not through the city system. The utility's water is entirely groundwater from its seven wells, with no purchased lake water anywhere in it.

Could that ever change?

Waukesha's case took about a decade and the review of all eight Great Lakes states. Oconomowoc has filed no such request and has no pipe to extend, which means a softener bought now will be working on well water.

Where can I follow Oconomowoc's hardness over time?

In the city's annual water quality reports. Comparing the 2022 and 2025 editions is how the move from 317 to 375 milligrams per liter shows up.
